Farm and agribusiness specialists taking part in the ongoing 11th biennial congress of the Africa Farm Management Association (AFMA) have described Africa as an agrarian continent which has its future in agriculture.
The event, with the theme: “Revitalisation of African Economy Through Sustainable Agricultural Development”, hosted by the Federal University, Dutse, Jigawa State, began in Abuja on Monday and will end tomorrow.
Speaking, the Vice Chancellor, Federal University, Dutse, Prof. Fatima Batul Mukhtar, said the present administration in Nigeria was focusing on reinvigorating agriculture to assume its lost glory of sustaining the nation’s economy in terms of provision of food, raw materials to the industries, employment generation and many others.
Representative of AFMA President, Prof. Philip Nyangweso, while thanking the university for hosting the event, assured that the association would continue to champion the need for farmers and those in agribusiness to take the lead in finding solutions to agricultural challenges threatening the continent.
The guest speaker and Provost of the Federal College of Education (Technical), Bichi, Prof. Bashir F. Muhammad, enumerated the obstacles militating the growth of agriculture in Africa, adding that concerted effort must be made to address some of the challenges in the interest of the growing population of the continent.
Senate spokesman, Sabi Abdullahi, who represented the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Abdullahi Adamu, assured that the National Assembly would continue its support for the agricultural sector through relevant legislations.
Participants, who spoke with Daily Trust, noted that the topic was timely as many countries in the continent now saw agriculture as the only way out.
