Most of the farmers who spoke during the one-day capacity training stressed the need for a return to the former one-year training period that would give them ample time to cover all aspects adequately.
Daily Trust gathered that the training and capacity building conducted by the Development Research and Project Centre (DPRC) hitherto ran for a year but was reduced to six months which they said is not sufficient to allow them get all the knowledge needed.
One Rilwan Zango said six months seem small as there is need for extension so that we can effectively cover all the needed modules for subsequent implementation on our farms.
For Magaji Zandan, it was only necessary as they have benefited tremendously from the training sessions noting that “we are able to grow over 20,000 seedlings through this project.”
On his part, a facilitator at the training, Mustapha Ballama of DRPC said the review of the training manual was informed by the need to have an up-to-date manual that will be in line with international best practices.
On the plea for extension, he said that was above his mandate as the donors, OXfam are in the best of position to see the desirability or otherwise of such plea but assured that something positive would be arrived at for better understanding if proper channels are followed.
“Ours is just to ensure we provide training to the five farmer associations submitted to us by Oxfam and we have been doing just that and the results can be seen,” he said.
