The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has cautioned passengers to be guided by laws during their stay at airports and refrain from destroying properties of the airlines and airports as a result of flight delays or cancellations.
This is just as the authority expressed its preparedness for the passengers’ surge associated with the Eid-El-Fitri period.
Managing Director of FAAN, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku spoke in Lagos during a special Iftar organised with the FAAN Headquarters Muslim community where she hosted over 300 Muslims.
Kuku, who spoke through the Director of Airports Operation, Capt. Abdullahi Mamood urged passengers to always be at the airports on time for their flights.
Daily Trust reports that there have been instances where irate passengers would take on the airline’s staff and properties over flight delays and cancellations.
Kuku however pleaded for the understanding and patience of passengers when their flights are delayed or cancelled.
She said, “All I’m asking for is that passengers should be guided by the law. You buy your ticket, you come to the airport and once there is a challenge, they should understand with the airline.
“All this coming, fighting, breaking things, is not doing any good to anyone. I have never seen anywhere in the world people do that. So we need to be patient.
“We need to understand. Yes, we need to understand our rights, and we need to understand the airlines’ rights also. We need to understand that everyone has their rights.
“They have rights, in as much as you have your rights, they have their rights. So, understand that this right is very, very important.”
The FAAN MD also explained that the authority has made efforts in eradicating touting and racketeering at the airports even as she assured of continuous improvement in airport infrastructure to enhance passengers’ facilitation and comfort.
Meanwhile, the authority has temporarily closed the Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport (SLAA), Ibadan, for upgrade works.
The upgrade being carried out jointly with the Oyo State Government is aimed at improving the infrastructure to an international status.
FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Mrs. Obiageli Orah, in a statement on sunday confirmed that the federal government had approved the closure.
