The Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, has identified false perception, dearth of qualified instructors, lack of learning materials and ill-equipped workshops among others as some of the challenges confronting the quality of technical and vocational education in the country
Adamu stated this in Benin during the National Business and Technical Examination Board (NABTEB) exhibition and roundtable on skills assessment.
Represented by a director in the ministry, Mrs. Olubukola Adedigbe, he noted that the factors, invariably affected enrolment at various Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) assessment and certification programmes in the country.
“In recognizing the relevance of skill qualifications towards the acceleration of national industrial rebirth, the ministry in collaboration with stakeholders and partners facilitate the institutionalisation of a six-level National Skills Qualification Framework (NSQF) in Nigeria,” he said.
Earlier, NABTEB Registrar, Professor Ifeoma Isiugo-Abanihe, said the board and its stakeholders faced challenges of filling existing gaps in providing training and verification of emerging new trades for the 21st century job market.
The registrar explained that the NSQF assessment procedures recognized the certification-based skills people already had, adding that NSQF was well structured and accessible by all skilled persons in the world of work.
While assuring that the board would create group of trained assessors and verifiers to accommodate the increasing demand for skill qualifications, she urged training institutions to train internal assessors.
