Abubakar Abbas was arrested while attempting to defraud the principal of Kano State College of Arts Science and Remedial Studies by police undercover agents, Kano Police Command Public Relations Officer, SP Baba Mohammed Azare said while parading the suspect at the police headquarters last week.

The suspect had approached the college boss and falsely presented himself as a Chief Superintendent of Police under the name of A. A. Liman Dan Borno with forged recruitment forms for enrolment into police academy, where he promised to secure admission for the son of the school head in the police academy, Azare.

The police spokesman said the principal who was suspicious of Abbas’, reported to the police who arrested him while he was still at the principal’s office.

However, Azare also disclosed that the suspect had succeeded in swindling people in different parts of the country under the pretence of getting their wards into the police academy.

“He used to collect N50,000 or N70,000 from people and collect their credentials  promising them slot in the academy and that is the end of what they will see of him. He has done it in Borno, Yobe, Abuja and Lagos,” the PPRO revealed.

The police said they had recovered items like fake complimentary cards which bore the suspect’s fraudulent name with the rank of a CSP, and forged police recruitment forms.

Explaining how he got police recruitment forms to journalists, Abbas said he picked them from Akara selling point in Lagos and reproduced them. The suspect who said he was married with a child blamed the state of unemployment in the country for his travails, saying he graduated with second class upper from University of Maiduguri but had failed to secure a job after losing his job as a clearing agent in Lagos.
