Family planning key to preventing maternal, child mortality

Adopting family planning methods is important in preventing the country’s poor maternal and child indices, the convener of My Friends and I Development Network, Atinuke Ayo-Makinde, has said.

She made the statement during a support programme it organized for pregnant and nursing mothers in Pyakasa, Lugbe, Abuja.

She listed the types of hormonal birth control methods to include birth control pills, implants and progestin injections among others.

She said,  “Families that have the number of children they can afford to train are able to devote more resources to providing them with adequate food, education, clothing, shelter and other necessities.

“It enables women to pursue their educational and career aspirations, acquire more wealth, and in the long run, contribute to the socio-economic development of their immediate communities.”

Ayo-Makinde said the project, tagged ‘Christmas Came Early 2021’, was organised to cushion the effects of the economic crisis in Nigeria.

The women numbering over 200, were given shoes, toys, baby clothes, diapers and food items among others.

A health advocate, Dr. Uzor Angelina said: “For marginalized and underserved communities like this, family planning is not really spoken about and the people lack information about it.”
