  • Sowore regains freedom, too

Retired Col. Sambo Dasuki, a former National Security Adviser (NSA) to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan regained his freedom yesterday.

Dasuki, who had been in custody of the DSS for the past four years, was released yesterday to the warmth embrace of his family, friends and lawyers.

The former NSA was arrested by the DSS on December 29, 2015. He regained his freedom around 8pm yesterday and went straight to his residence located at N0 13, John Kadiya Street, Asokoro, Abuja in company of his lawyers.

Dasuki’s house was agog as well-wishers trooped there while family members were seen in jubilant mood. One of our correspondents who was at the house ahead of the arrival of the former NSA, reported that Dasuki, dressed in a multi-coloured batik, was ushered into his residence by his lawyers and few security personnel.

His lawyers had in the last four years secured nine different bails from six judges but none was respected by the federal government until yesterday.

Dasuki’s lead counsel, Ahmed Raji (SAN), said they were glad their client was released.

The ex-NSA was seen exchanging pleasantries with visitors while his children and close allies looked on in awe.

“He will take his rest, he will not say anything,” a family member said. “This is not the time for any comment…We thank Allah for his release after these years,” he added.

Also released yesterday was the convener of #RevolutionNow protest, Omoyele Sowore who left the DSS premises in Abuja around 6.20pm.

Presidential spokesman Garba Shehu said in a statement last night: “The Presidency wishes to clarify the release on bail, of the Presidential Candidate of the AAC in the February 2019 elections, Omoyele Sowore.

“Some international news outlets have mistakenly been describing his release as that of a journalist.

“Sowore called for a revolution to overthrow the democratically elected government of Nigeria. He did so on television, and from a privileged position as the owner of a widely read digital newspaper run from the United States of America. He founded an organisation, Revolution Now, to launch, in their own words, ‘Days of Rage’, with the publicised purpose of fomenting mass civil unrest and the elected administration’s overthrow. No government will allow anybody to openly call for destabilization in the country and do nothing.

The DSS had earlier yesterday invited Dasuki and Sowore’s lawyers who signed documents for their release.
