Thousands of supporters yesterday gave the El-Kanemi Warriors a heroic welcome after the club was promoted to the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) after two years in the Nigeria National League.

An extraordinary crowd welcomed the club at Jimitilo, the major entrance to Maiduguri, wearing club uniforms and colourful caps in shades of yellow and green, before moving to the club camp and playing numerous traditional and contemporary musical instruments to celebrate the club promotion.

Elkanemi Warriors secured promotion to the NPFL after topping the group A league fixtures in Sokoto after a goalless draw with Sokoto United.

State Commissioner of Youth, Sports and Poverty Alleviation, Hon Saina Buba led government officials, other prominent personalities and admirers of the club.

The commissioner also donated N1 million to the captain of the club to be shared among the players as part of motivation before their meeting with the Executive Governor of the state, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum.

Responding, the Chairman of the club, Shariff Abubakar thanked the commissioner and the state governor for their moral and financial support throughout the campaign.
