D’Banj, who won the 2014 World Music Award in Monte Carlo, Monaco, recently signed-on four artists, K-Switch, brothers Moss Kriss and Ralph Kriss and Tonto Dikeh.
Also known as Bang Lee, he said signing-on Dikeh was no mistake and that he could not wait to reveal her to the world.
Reacting to this, Jeffery Okoro, a student of University of Abuja, said the signing-on of Tonto will further boost D’banj’s business empire.
“Banga Lee has good business initiative and does not go wrong with business decisions; he has just ventured into the agricultural sector and now expanding his music empire.
“He has won so many awards and laurels internationally and locally.
“This signing-on could not have come at a better time than now, especially his recent win at the 2014 World Music Award in, Monte Carlo, Monaco,” Okoro said. “He is a good role model for the youth of today.”
Applauding the move, banker, Beatrice Oni, who described herself as a Kokolete, described D’banj and Dike as an “eccentric” brand. She said: “It is not about their singing abilities, it about the buzz they generate and whether anyone likes it or not, they’re hitting it big for real.
“Their combination is weird, rare but iconic. I am happy about this new signing and I am sure Tonto Dikeh will be great in DB records.”
For Miss Sarah Peterside, currently on national youth corps service, it is an opportunity for Tonto to prove critics wrong about her singing ability.
“I recall Tonto’s first song was a total disaster, especially on the internet. I am glad that she has been given a chance to show her musical talent to the world and I thank D’banj for looking beyond her musical history and giving her the platform,” Peterside said.
Bowen University student, Miss Joy Ukandu, differs in her view: “I feel Banga Lee has made a big mistake by signing-on Dikeh.”
In the same light, Charles Danjuma, an electronics dealer, said Tonto’s first attempt on music did not receive positive acceptance from most fans.
“I cannot understand why D`banj signed-on Tonto Dikeh, the fact that they are birthday mates is not good enough or a justifiable reason to sign-on a person. We are talking about business here, anything can happen.
“I wish him luck because he is hard working and a good role model,’’ Danjuma said.
Meanwhile, D’banj has refuted claims that he misses former record label mate and boss, Don Jazzy.
He said: “People are alleging that we have come together again, but the question is, who told them that we are quarrelling? It’s just that we are running our own different businesses now.”
