The state chairman of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN),Mr Deniss Etong, told our correspondent that there was enough fertilizer in the state but is beyond the reach of the farmers.
‘’Fertilizer is available through the GES but famers cannot afford it because of the high cost, we appeal to the government to come to our aid and subsidize the product for farmers to boost food production in the state’.’
He said a bag of fertilizer cost N3,150 as against N1,800 and called on the state government to come to the aid of over 300,000 farmers who registered in the state through the GES in the last exercise.
Etong said the exercise would be useful if the state government would use it to supply the input to the farmers on time, adding, ‘’Timely distribution of the fertilizer is very important and it will go a long way to boost food production in the state.”
He called on the state and federal governments to ensure that there is no diversion so that the federal government’s agricultural transformation agenda would not be sabotaged.
