A renowned professor of agricultural extension and research, Tunji Arokoyo, has said that the ongoing Farmers’ Field School capacity building in Zaria will tackle many farmers’ problems in the country. Professor Orokoya, who spoke with our reporter from Zaria, yesterday said farmers’ field school is the best global approach to solving or proffering practical solutions to handling farm diseases, and bad agronomy practices that threaten good harvest and income amongst farmers in the country.
“Farmers Field School is a school without walls where you build the capacity of farmers to become real scientists, doing-by-learning and sharing experiences on how to solve their farm problems,” he said.
According to him, the twelve days practical training put together by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and the Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations, was to empower farmers on how to deal with emerging threats of diseases and to adopt good agronomy practices. Dr. Louise Setshwaelo the country representative of the Food Agriculture Organization (FAO) said that the agency has been promoting the farmers’ Field School approach since 1989.
