Farmers in Ikole Local Government Area of Ekiti State have expressed happiness over recent high volume of rainfall with hope of recording bumper.
A cross section of the farmers told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in separate interviews at Ikole on Wednesday that the climate has been farmers’ friendly.
They said that the rainfall pattern in the past two months has brightened their hope for bumper harvest this year.
Mr Isaac Kokumo, a cocoyam and cassava farmer said that high volume of rains would enhance the size of yam tubers due to wet ground.
He urged farmers not to allow weeds take over their farms and cautioned that the high volume rains could also aid weeds to grow rapidly.
Mr Jimoh Oturepe, another farmer, said that heavy rain and sunny weather being experiencing now, was best for cocoyam and other types of tubers.
He, however, noted that the heavy rainfall was not good for tomatoes and pepper, especially in the Southwest.
According to him, heavy rainfall is contributing to the scarcity of tomatoes and pepper.
Mrs Oluyemi Aluko, a cassava farmer, said that the favourable rainfall pattern had encouraged her to expand her cassava farm.
She was optimistic that bumper cassava harvest awaits her in December.
