Former Chairman of Dunukofia local government in the state, Mr. Goddy Eze said the decision by farmers in the state to insist in getting fertilizer free led to delay in the distribution of the commodity hence government’s decision to handover the commodity to big farmers.
He said in the past, government distributed fertilizer to big farmers but with the introduction of GES that only capture small farmers, but this year the state government decided to handover the consignment to dealers with mandate to sell to even the big farmers.
Some of the farmers that spoke to Daily Trust said they rejected the idea of buying the fertilizer under the GES arrangement in the state because the federal and state governments jointly paid for a bag while farmers in the state are charged N6,500 for the second bag.
One of the major fertilizer distributor in the state, Chief Nnamdi Mekoh said all GES registered farmers are entitled to buy two bags of fertilizer from the redemption centre closest to them on payment of the stipulated amount.
