Farmers in Taraba State are witnessing bumper harvest, Daily Trust findings have revealed.

Across the state, farmers have started harvesting their crops and have expressed satisfaction over high yield.

Crops harvested include maize, yam, cassava and groundnuts and the harvested crops have already flooded markets in the state.

Daily Trust gathered that prices of foodstuff items have come down drastically as a result of the harvest while grain merchants from neigbouring states are making bulk purchases.

A 100 kilogramme of newly harvested maize is sold at N9000 to N10,000 against  N15,500  before the harvest while a tuber of yam sold at N900 before the harvest is now sold at N500.

Similarly, a 100 kilogramme of groundnut sold at N25,000 is now sold at N12,000 while the price of cassava has also crashed by about 40 percent.

Farmers interviewed said from all indications there is going to be a bumper harvest in the state this year.

A farmer, Alhaji Haruna Garba, told our reporter that he harvested 100 bags of maize from one of his farms, adding that he hopes to harvest 700 more bags from three other maize farms

He attributed the bumper harvest to uninterrupted rainfall from beginning of the cropping season and availability of fertiliser and other farm inputs.

The chairman of All Farmers Association in the state, Mr Biams Adamu, told our reporter that this year, more people took to farming, adding that from all indications there is going to be a bumper harvest in the state this year.

He said unlike previous years, the state government released fertiliser to farmers in good time and at subsidised rate.

He said many farmers purchased fertiliser and other inputs provided by the government and that impacted positively on farming activities in the state.
