Speaking at the training ptogramme, permanent secretary of the federal ministry of agriculture, Mrs Ibukun Odusote, said the training programme was targeted at promoting private sector participation in agriculture and how to provide about three million jobs in the agricultural value chains.
She said the programme was geared towards diversification of the nation’s economy, attainment of food security and reduction in foreign exchange spending on food importation.
Speaking at the 3-day snail farming workshop held at the Ogun-Osun River Basin Authority Training Centre, Abeokuta Ogun State, Mrs Odusote said a database of farmers in Nigeria was being developed with their full biometric information to help in distributing subsidised inputs to farmers and eliminate corruption in the distribution of farm inputs, adding that the database would be updated on a regular basis.
The Agricultural Transformation Agenda Director in Ogun State, Dr Akinsola Olumuyiwa David, said that the goal of the training was to encourage snail farming and increase the farmers earnings.
The deputy director of women in agric/nutrition, Mrs Zainab Towobola, said a feedback/monitoring mechanism was put in place to ensure the success of the programme.
Mrs Funmi Onyioza-Olatunde, Chief Consultant Farmwoman Limited, described snail production as a very lucrative business that can enhance the nation’s economy and generates employment amongst women and youth in the country.
