What it takes to be a rice farmer:
“I have been a rice farmer for over 15 years, and I know what it takes to be a rice farmer even though the yield has been decreasing for an unknown reason to us. Many people in the public and private sector engaged in rice farming because rice farming could make you rich within a season if you are lucky,” he revealed.
It’s tomato or nothing else:
For Abdullahi Yusuf Dorowar Sallau, tomato farming has been a lifesaving venture for him in the last 17 years, adding: “When it struck to me that the merchandise business is no longer viable, I decided to remain back at home and try tomato farming.
“To be honest with you, after I harvested my first tomato proceeds I regretted being a merchant in my life. I realised that we were sitting on a gold mine without realising that even with the problem of poor processing techniques. Since then it has been tomato or nothing else,” he said.
Getting involved in farming:
Abdullahi Bawa Guri is a young civil servant who had ventured into small scale rice and tomato farming four years ago. He told our reporter that he got involved in farming due to life’s challenges for a low level income earner. According to him, he started on a borrowed piece of land and later proceeded to a hired one and now he can boast of a vast land that he cultivates annually.
