An Upper Customary Court sitting at Daura Road, Kaduna, on Tuesday sentenced one Anas Lawal, a mechanic and father of two, to nine months in a correctional facility for stealing food items.
The Judge, Patience Musa, delivered the ruling after the defendant pleaded guilty to the charge of theft.
She, however, offered the convict an option of a N50,000 fine, while exonerating him of the charge of criminal force as previously alleged by the prosecution.
Earlier, the prosecutor, Sambo Ishaya, informed the court that the items recovered from Lawal included a carton of noodles, a bag of Semovita, a pack of cornflakes, and a fruit drink.
He added that two sets of master keys were also recovered from the convict along with the stolen food items, which have since been returned to the rightful owner.
In his plea for leniency, Lawal asked the court for mercy, stating that he is a family man responsible for a wife and two children.
