The Federal Character Commission (FCC) has urged parents across the country to encourage their children to enlist in the military, police and other paramilitary agencies to support efforts at tackling Nigeria’s security challenges.

The Executive Chairman of the Commission, Mrs Ayo Hulayat Omidiran, made the call during a sensitization campaign held at the College of Education, Gashua, in Yobe State.

Represented by the Commissioner representing Yobe State in the Commission, Hon. Jibrin Maigari, Omidiran said the appeal became necessary in view of the security challenges confronting the country.

He said security personnel play critical roles in combating crime, responding to emergencies, protecting lives and property, and maintaining law and order.

According to him, joining the military, police and other paramilitary organisations provides young Nigerians with an opportunity to serve their country while contributing to national peace, security and stability.

“We are drawing the attention of parents and youths to the importance of joining the Nigerian Army, the Nigeria Police Force and other paramilitary agencies. Given the security challenges the country has experienced over the years, it is important for parents to encourage their children to take up careers in these services,” he said.

Maigari said the sensitization campaign was aimed at reaching parents and youths across the 17 local government areas of Yobe State.

He added that the commission would continue to engage young people on employment opportunities, social security and skills acquisition programmes.

The commissioner expressed concern over the involvement of some youths in political thuggery and violence, stressing the need for productive engagement through legitimate employment opportunities.

“We always encourage young people to explore opportunities in the military, police and other security services, particularly at the entry level, as a means of contributing positively to society,” he said.

He also highlighted the Federal Government’s efforts to empower youths through various skills development centres operating across the state’s three senatorial zones.

According to him, the centres are actively providing training in different vocational and technical skills aimed at enhancing self-reliance among young people.

Maigari further encouraged students to seek admission into higher institutions, noting that Yobe State hosts several federal institutions, while others are located in neighbouring states.

He reaffirmed the commission’s support for the policies and programmes of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

The commissioner also called on his supporters and political associates to support the aspiration of Baba Malam Wali in the 2027 Yobe State governorship election.
