Federal College of Education (FCE)/Yola, which was upgraded to a degree awarding institution to bridge educational manpower gap in the North East has graduated a student with first class degree in Chemistry.

The school of undergraduates studies recently graduated a total of 164 students in various fields of academic endeavour of which one of them, Sanusi Tukur Malbeti bagged first class B.Sc in Chemistry.

Speaking, the College Provost, Professor Abdulmumini Saad said a total of nine degree programs had been accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC) and that the first set of graduates are currently collecting their results and will soon be mobilised for the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) scheme”.

He disclosed that the fully accredited fields included Islamic Studies, Agriculture, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, Physical Education while English and Health Education got interim accreditation for lack of  personnel and equipment respectively.

Professor Abdulmumini noted that the school devised means to cut cost which included involvement of regular college staff, volunteers and sharing of class rooms and laboratories with NCE students.

He said students are charged higher than their counterparts in federal and state universities because government did not fund degree programmes run by colleges of education.

Teachers interviewed by Daily Trust in Yola welcomed the upgrade of FCE Yola in to a degree awarding institution, saying the development was already boosting local manpower and provided teachers with an opportunity for career development.
