Lecturers under the auspices of College of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU) have asked the National Assembly to upgrade the Federal College of Education Zaria into a dual mode specialized university of education.
The union had set up a seven-man committee to collate views of members towards writing a memorandum on the review of the status of the college.
The Federal Executive Council (FEC) on May 22, 2015 elevated the college alongside three others to Federal Universities of Education. The decision was later suspended and the colleges reverted to status quo.
The committee, chaired by Dr. Ahmed Bello, last week presented its findings to the House of Representatives Committee on Tertiary Education and Services at a public hearing in Abuja where it said majority of the COEASU congress members opted for a dual mode specialized university of education.
The committee said the college had adequate facilities and man power to run dual university education and prayed that “the National Assembly proceed with consideration and passage of the Draft Bill for the elevation of FCE Zaria into a specialized Federal University of Education running a dual mode system for the benefit of the immediate community and the nation at large.”
In dual mode system, sub-degree programmes like remedial, NCE, undergraduate, graduate, postgraduate and other certificate programmes can be run.
It said the salaries for staff members should not be tampered with but may be increased, and there should be no retrenchment.
