Workers across the six Area Councils in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), under the umbrella of the National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), have suspended their three-month-old strike.

Abuja Metro had previously reported that both area council workers and primary school teachers began a strike in March 2025. Their grievances stemmed from the non-implementation of a new minimum wage and outstanding arrears owed to them by the six area council chairmen.

FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, intervened by withholding the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) of the six area councils to facilitate payment to the striking council workers.

A communiqué, jointly signed by the FCT NULGE President, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Kabi, and Publicity Secretary, Comrade Abdulmumin Sa’ad, officially announced the strike’s suspension.

“After exhaustive deliberations and considering the appeals from the Honorable Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, traditional rulers and stakeholders, the meeting resolved to among other things, suspend the three months strike effective from midnight Monday, July 14, 2025, and directed the workers to resume on Tuesday, July 15, 2025,” the communiqué read in part.
