The Federal Capital Territory (FCT ) Commissioner for Public Complaints Commission (PCC) Hon Musa Dikko, has expressed concern over the indiscriminate dumping of refuse on a newly constructed road in Kuduru, Bwari Area Council of the territory.

Dikko, who was visibly angry when he led some officials of the commission during a fact -finding to the community on Thursday, described the development as unacceptable and a threat to public health.

He said the visit followed complaints received from residents of the community, which he said informed the commission’s on-the-spot visit to ascertain the true situation.

He said it was unfortunate that the road was constructed by the FCT Administration for the benefit and convenience of the public but the same infrastructure has now been turned into a refuse dump site.

He described the situation as “regrettable and capable of undermining the purpose for which the road was constructed.”

He, therefore, promised that the commission would carry out further investigations to determine whether the location serves merely as a refuse collection point or if it is officially designated as a dump site by the relevant authorities.

The commissioner, however, warned that the continuous accumulation of waste along the road and around the area poses serious environmental and public health risks, with the potential to trigger disease outbreaks if left uncheckd.

He also appealed to residents of the community to desist from dumping refuse on roads, highways, waterways and drainage channels, stressing that proper waste disposal remains a collective responsibility.

Dikko also assured residents of Bwari that the commission will liaise with the appropriate authorities to ensure that the refuse is evacuated, while necessary measures would be taken to prevent a recurrence.
