The Chairman of the FCT wing of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Comrade Mohammed Abdullahi Shafas, has said that the monthly allocation the FCT area council chairmen received is enough to pay minimum wage arrears and other allowances of the primary school teachers in the territory.

Shafas, while speaking with newsmen at the Teachers House in Gwagwalada on Thursday, said it was unfortunate that despite the council chairmen receiving their monthly allocations in full, they always failed in showing commitment to pay teachers their arrears and other entitlements.

“The union is also part of the Joint Account Allocation Committee (JAAC) meeting where the monthly allocations are shared across board, while the FCT council chairmen receive their allocations direct without FCTA tempering with their money,” he said.

He noted that it was disheartening that the council chairmens had no responsibility to shoulder than paying of teachers salary, saying head teachers of LEA primary schools bought chalk in their respective schools.

“But building of classrooms and provision of instructional materials is the sole responsibility of the FCT Universal Basic Education Board (UBEB),” he said.

He further said it was unfortunate that primary school teachers were being treated as second class citizens despite that they were the builders of society.

Shafas, therefore, appealed to the FCT Minister, Nyemso Wike, to replicate what he did when he was governor in Rivers State in the FCT.
