School age girls in Abuja were on Wednesday encouraged to see themselves as future scientists, engineers and innovators during an event to mark the International Day of Women and Girls in Science (IDWGS).
The event which held at Government Science & Technical College, Garki Area 3, was sponsored by IHS Nigeria and organised in partnership with the Women’s Technology Empowerment Centre (WTEC) and the Youth Initiative for Sustainable Human Development in Africa (YiSHDA).
Speaking during her goodwill message at the event, Associate Director of Sustainability at IHS Nigeria, Asmau Smila, told the girls that they belong in science and technology.
“You belong in classrooms where big ideas are born, in laboratories where discoveries are made and in conversations that shape the future of our world,” she said.

She reminded the students that STEM is not just about numbers or formulas but about creativity and innovation. “Your dreams matter. Your voice matters. And you belong in science, technology, engineering and math,” she stressed.
Mr. Lesley Tarabina, Curriculum Developer at WTEC, said the programme was designed to give girls the skills and confidence to thrive in technology.
“Today, at this IDWGS Day event powered by IHS and implemented by W.TEC and YiSHDA, we reaffirm our commitment to empowering girls with the skills and confidence to thrive in technology,” he said.
He noted that last year, the initiative reached 300 girls in Lagos, Kano and Enugu. “This year, we are covering Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt, with a bold goal to impact 600 girls and inspire the next generation of innovators,” he added.
Director of Programs at YiSHDA, Mr. Moses Agbara, also reiterated the organisation’s commitment to building the next generation of female leaders in STEM. He said the celebration of IDWGS continues to inspire young female students to aspire to greatness.
“Our commitment is to close gender gaps through initiatives that inspire, empower and connect young people to opportunities locally and globally,” he said.
The event featured interactive sessions and mentorship opportunities, with organisers emphasising that every girl deserves the chance to learn, explore and succeed in STEM fields.
