The FCT Golf Association continues to make significant strides in driving the development of golf at the grassroots level in Abuja.

Led by Akabom Enebong, the association recently met with the Permanent Secretary of the Social Development Secretariat, FCT, Olubunmi Olowokeere, to explore partnerships aimed at expanding the sport’s reach.

Speaking during the meeting, Enebong emphasized golf’s role as a game of trust and integrity, capable of transforming lives while requesting for subvention, a secretariat, and a meeting with other agencies in the FCT.

“Golf is a game of trust and integrity that can uplift individuals from the bottom to the top. We have a grassroots development program designed to take the game to every corner of Abuja, and we cannot achieve this without the support of the secretariat.

“As an Olympic sport, we aim to introduce golf at an early age. Our vision aligns with the federal government’s grassroots development agenda. We also plan to establish mobile clinics and introduce the Minister’s Cup, with the incumbent minister as the patron and the president as the grand patron,” he stated.

In response, Olowokeere acknowledged the vital role of sports in overall well-being.

“Sports play a crucial role in our well-being. While I don’t play golf yet, I intend to start soon. I recognize that sports contribute to growth in all aspects of life. Golf, in particular, allows individuals to remain active well into old age,” she noted.

Recently, the association unveiled ambitious plans to enhance grassroots participation in golf while working towards Nigeria’s Olympic aspirations. The association has established partnerships with the FCT Education Board to introduce golf academies and training ranges in five schools. Additionally, it has collaborated with former Super Eagles striker Osaze Odemwingie to promote the sport further.
