Following the generous rewards presented to the Super Falcons by the federal government, the Chairman of the FCT Golf Association, Akabom Enebong, has appealed for similar recognition to be extended to athletes in other sports, particularly golf.

President Bola Tinubu recently honoured the Super Falcons with a cash gift of $100,000 (in naira equivalent), a three-bedroom apartment, and national awards after they secured a record-breaking 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title by defeating host nation Morocco 3-2 in the final.

“This is really the renewed hope effect in sports and I appreciate the president for the kind gesture and gifts to the Super Falcons. This will boost their morale going forward,” Enebong said.

He, however, emphasized the need for inclusivity in celebrating Nigerian athletes across all disciplines. “We know that football is arguably the biggest sport in Nigeria, but I believe same treatment can be extended to other sports like golf and athletics. I want to urge the government at all levels to begin to honour athletes,” he added.

Enebong also raised concerns about delayed rewards for athletes who participated in the recent National Sports Festival, warning that such lapses could affect future performances. “We are preparing for the youth games soon and there could be backlog. There should be increased funding from government and corporate organisations should come in and sponsor these young athletes. Sports is a source of employment for the youths and reduces crime and restiveness in our youths,” he noted.

The FCT Golf Association continues to promote the sport through initiatives such as the proposed NOG Energy Week golf tournament, the “Golf to School” program, and strategic partnerships—including one with former Super Eagles striker Osaze Odemwingie to develop young talent.
