The newly elected president of the AMLSN in Abuja, Ndubuisi Ebitea, stated this yesterday shortly after his inauguration saying that “the one thing that the association is promoting, though it is the MLSCN that is driving it is introduction of quality management systems into our laboratories. We call it turn-around time; it is one of the key items in quality management system.
“We are going to embark on projects and programmes to build the capacity of our members. We are going to work at introducing quality management systems both in public and private laboratories,” he assured.
He noted that if members and the laboratories begin to imbibe the culture of quality management systems, the issue of delay in results will be a thing of the past.
The Abuja AMLSN new president also said that the branch will take the fight against unregistered laboratory outfits seriously because the MLSCN which regulates the practice frowns at quackery, adding that medical lab scientists do not practice quackery but those who are not trained medical lab scientists.
He promised to build and improve the capacity of members which will translate to better quality results for members of the.
Earlier, the immediate past president of the FCT branch, Dr Casmir Ifeanyi, said, “The singular reason there were conflicting lab results is because of infiltration by charlatans, persons holding out themselves to the public as medical lab scientists but who are not.”
He said: “They may hold various certifications related to health. When you have people with certificates in science laboratory technology, pharmacists and even clinicians who do have the requisite training providing testing, you can be sure that you will have conflicting results.”
Dr Ifeanyi explained that the MLSCN has been up at sanitising the system but regretted that there are situations where heads of certain hospitals have denied them access from carrying their lawful inspection at laboratories. “What we have decided to do is to engage them head on: we want to let them see reason why they must improve the standard of service they provide in their labs by first engaging the appropriate personnel and providing testing facilities that meet standards.
“And of course, when you have conflicting lab results, you can bring the matter to the association and we will be able to help you sort that out as the issue of conflicting results can come from anywhere,” he added.
