The Minister of the FCT, Muhammad Musa Bello, has been urged to consider and approve the naming of the Kwali Township Stadium after a late FCT Director of Sports, Mr. Ayuba Bwambwa.
The second son of the late Bwambwa, Ayuba Jonah, made the call during the final football match in a competition organised in honour of the late FCT Director of Sports by the Kwali Council Coaches Association yesterday.
Jonah said the call for the naming of the stadium after his father was because of his immense contribution towards the success of sports in the territory.
He noted that the late sports director brought FA League matches to rural areas against the usual practice where all league matches were played at the Old Parade Ground in Garki, Abuja, adding that the late sports director successfully led the FCT team to an impressive outing where it emerged 15th on the medal table out of the states that participated at KADA 2008 National Sports Festival.
“Among his other achievements, he was the first indigenous person to attain the leadership of the FCT Sports Council; to date,” he said.
The Chairman of Kwali Council Coaches Association, Bukar Mohammed, said his council decided to organise the competition in honour of the late FCT Director of Sports because he was their mentor.
Mohammed said the late sports director brought and encouraged sporting activities among the youths of not only the council, but the entire area councils.
“And apart from that, the late acting sports director formed the Kwali Council Coaches Association,” he said.
Government Junior Secondary (JSS) Piri won the trophy after defeating Junior Secondary School (JSS) Yangoji 1-0 in the final of the competition.
