A senatorial aspirant of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Ezekiel Musa Dalhatu, has said his political mission is to secure a full third-tier governance structure for the territory, where residents and indigenes can enjoy systems similar to those obtainable in the states.
Dalhatu made the remarks in Abuja shortly after scaling the party’s screening exercise ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He said the absence of a full state-like structure for the FCT has continued to limit political inclusion, particularly the inability of residents to participate in governorship and state House of Assembly elections.
According to him, his legislative agenda, if elected to the Senate, will focus on pushing for reforms that would create a more inclusive governance framework for the territory through sustained lobbying and collaboration with other lawmakers.
Dalhatu added that inclusivity, regardless of tribe, ethnicity, religion or political affiliation, would form the core of his representation.
He also said he intends to sponsor legislation aimed at protecting both indigenous communities and non-indigenes living in the FCT, while addressing issues surrounding taxation and economic fairness.
He criticised what he described as multiple layers of taxation affecting residents and business owners in Abuja, calling for a streamlined tax system that would promote business growth and economic development.
On his chances in the 2027 race, which is expected to feature strong contenders including incumbent Senator Ireti Kingibe of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and Senator Philip Aduda of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dalhatu expressed optimism, saying his strength lies in his grassroots connection across communities in the FCT.
