Pensioners in the FCT are reportedly suffering in silence due to the non-payment of their monthly monies. Apart from this, the retirees have also not been paid the 25 per cent or so allowance as directed by the federal government recently.

The retirees who are in their thousands are experiencing difficult conditions due to the increase in the prices of food and other necessities of life. The pensioners could hardly meet up with the basic responsibilities of their families, especially the payment of residential accommodation, school fees, and provision of health services to their immediate families. Up to date, no explanation has been given to them concerning the non-payment of their money.

It is possible that as at now, neither the FCT minister Barr Nyesom Wike, his minister of state, Hajiya Mariya Mahmud, nor the management of the FCTA/FCDA are aware of the predicament of the FCT pensioners who were recently encouraged to attend workshops on health matters and personal issues organised for them by the FCTA pension department in various locations within Abuja.

Many of the pensioners are now worried over the situation because they believe that they will not fall into this situation with the coming on board of Barr Wike who is regarded as a man who has a great pity and respect for senior citizens and also as a hard-working person widely being regarded as Mr project during his eight years tenure of office as the executive governor of River State.

As at yesterday, no plausible explanation has been given to the retirees concerning the delay in the payment of their monies apart from the apportioning of blames to the CBN and other arms of government as responsible for the present predicament of the retirees despite efforts made by representatives and union members of the retirees.

Most of the pensioners have expressed the desire for a situation to create itself where they will present their case to the minister or his minister of state. They are of the view that senior citizens should even get their money before workers are paid their emolument in decent societies.
