The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command said it has deployed 2,202 of its personnel, as well as Explosives Ordinance Disposal (EOD) units ahead of the celebration of Christmas and New Year.

The Commissioner of Police (CP), Miller G. Dantawaye, who disclosed this to newsmen during a press briefing, said proactive deployment was aimed at ensuring a peaceful, secure and hitch-free celebration for all residents and visitors.

He said the police personnel had been strategically positioned at places of worship, recreational and event centres, major highways, motor parks and other public spaces.

He explained that such deployments were complemented by increased visibility policing and intelligence-led patrols after identifying black spots, uncompleted buildings and shanties which might be exploited by criminal elements. He added that, “And in addition, Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) units have also been deployed to conduct routine sweeps at places of worship and other public gathering points in line with directives of the Inspector-General of Police.”

CP Miller reiterated that the use of fireworks, firecrackers, banga, knockout or any similar explosive device was prohibited within the FCT.
