Ahead of the 2016 area council election in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), some political parties in the territory have picked candidates after conducting primary elections.
Chairmanship candidates from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have emerged in a primary election monitored by officials from the FCT office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The two political parties held the primary election simultaneously on Monday in some area councils in the territory.
In Abaji Area Council, Alhaji Abdulrahman Ajiya, emerged as chairmanship candidate of APC after he polled 184 votes to beat his closest opponent, Kamal Adamu who polled 43 votes
In Kwali Area Council, the former chairman of the council, Mr. Joseph Shazin, emerged as the APC candidate, after he polled 163 votes against his close rival, Usman Jiya, who got 82 votes.
Also, the incumbent chairman of Gwagwalada Area Council, Alhaji Abubakar Jibrin Giri, emerged winner of the party’s primaries after he polled 183 votes against his opponent, Alhaji Jirbin Garba, who got 111 votes.
A former speaker of Kuje Area Council, Alhaji Abdullahi A. Galadima, has emerged the APC chairmanship candidate after he polled 117 votes against Alhaji Hassan Bako, who got 91 votes.
Meanwhile, the incumbent chairmen of Abaji, Kuje and Kwali Area Councils, Alhaji Yahaya Garba Gawu Mr. Shaban Ishaku Tete and Mr. Ibrahim Daniel, got the PDP’s ticket through consensus vote while Abdullahi Umar Yunusa was elected through same means.
According to the election timetable released by FCT INEC, the conduct of party primaries including resolution of disputes arising from the primaries  is scheduled to end tomorrow while political campaign starts by 20 December.
