Ahead of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council Elections scheduled for February 21, 2026, the Labour Party (LP) in the FCT has announced its decision to support and vote for candidates of other political parties across the six area councils.
Joshua Chinedu Obika, the member representing the AMAC/Bwari Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, disclosed this while addressing journalists in Abuja.
The announcement followed a strategic meeting with party stakeholders held at his constituency office in Kubwa.
Obika explained that since the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has excluded the Labour Party from participating in the upcoming elections, stakeholders have decided to throw their support behind qualified candidates from alternative parties.
The lawmaker expressed frustration over the exclusion, noting that a court of competent jurisdiction had previously ordered INEC to include the party within 48 hours.
He characterized the commission’s failure to act as a “disobedience of court orders.”
“We are going to spread our support across various political parties. You may see the Labour Party supporting the Social Democratic Party (SDP), the APC, the ADC, the YPP, or any other party, depending on the specific negotiations,” he said.
The Labour Party was excluded from the 2026 FCT Area Council elections by INEC following internal leadership disputes and a pending court case regarding the party’s national executive representation.
While the party is still seeking legal redress, the leadership maintains that its members must remain active participants in the democratic process.
