Traditional rulers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have been urged to maintain peace in their domains ahead of next year’s general elections.

The Secretary, Area Councils’ Services Secretariat, Malam Abubakar Bappa, made the call during a closed door meeting with upgraded traditional rulers in the FCT, led by the Ona of Abaji and chairman of the FCT council of traditional rulers, Alhaji Adamu Baba Yunusa, held at the secretariat’s conference hall on Thursday.

Bappa said the secretariat was concerned with the sustenance of peace and protection of lives and property in the territory, even as he said the meeting was a routine in sensitizing the chiefs about security issues in their domains.

He said the traditional rulers had a great role to play towards ensuring the protection of lives and property during the upcoming general elections in the country.

“Therefore, we want to call on  the traditional rulers across the FCT to ensure they sensitized their subjects against the dangers of allowing the youth to engage in violence and other forms of social vices that may lead to crisis in their domains, “ he said.

Bappa urged them to ensure they always liaised with relevant security agencies and other ethnic leaders to ensure there was peace and harmony among their people.

Also speaking on behalf of the traditional rulers, the Ona of Abaji, commended the secretary for summoning them for the peace and security meeting

He assured the secretary that they would summon all community leaders, village and district heads across the FCT to sensitize them on the need for them to maintain peace during the forthcoming general elections in the territory.
