The Directorate of Road Traffic Services (DRTS) has said that it is restrategising with the police authorities and other relevant bodies in the FCT to instill discipline in road users.

According to a statement by Kalu Emetu, Head, Public Relations (DRTS) popularly called Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO) and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Abuja, the directorate was worried by the level at which motorists in the nation’s capital flouted traffic regulations.

It also said the FCT Police Commissioner, Bala Ciroma, who is the chairman of the Ministerial Joint Task Force, stated that there was need to remind all stakeholders about their roles in ensuring better traffic management in the territory.

The statement indicated that Ciroma made the remark during a parley in his office on Friday, where he explained that motorcycles and tricycles  had been banned from plying the city roads as part of measures to ensure sanity.

Ciroma was quoted as saying it was pertinent for the meeting to brainstorm on the best approach to have a more organised FCT as envisaged by the founding fathers.

“Your members must not ply within the restricted zones, it is already a law in FCT among other traffic laws and violation of these laws henceforth it will be seen as a serious offence and will be treated accordingly,’’ he stated.

He urged the chairmen of the tri-cycle and motorcycle associations to be part of the enforcement of the law.

He said the riders must adhere to the law for the territory to be sanitised and assume its proper status.

He further stated that the associations would first be given an opportunity to call their members to order while failure to comply would be treated according to the law.

The meeting resolved that the Ministerial Joint Taskforce and other operational teams of the directorate would expedite action to ensure every traffic law was obeyed through a coordinated enforcement.

The Director, FCT DRTS, and vice chairman of the task force, Wadata Bodinga, commended stakeholders present at the meeting and the FCT Police Commissioner.

The meeting also resolved to commence immediate enlightenment talk shows in all the major operational bases of the associations. (NAN)
