The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) Social Development Secretariat has evacuated 789 destitutes from Abuja streets.

Those evacuated were beggars, the mentally ill and other miscreants, who were repatriated to their respective states after proper profiling and rehabilitation processes.

The Acting Secretary of the FCT Social Development Secretariat, Mrs. Irene Adebola Elegbede, stated this yesterday while briefing newsmen on the activities of the secretariat in the last two years.

She said the SDS worked as a team to see that the objectives of the secretariat are successfully carried out through its various departments such as gender development, arts and culture, social welfare services, sports, tourism and youth development respectively.

“On the issue of abandoned babies, we have recorded quite a number of them that were either dumped by their mothers in refuse dumps or on the streets of Abuja which is quite unfortunate; it is cruelty on the human part, but what we do is that we take these children to the hospital for treatment after which we refer them to the orphanage homes where they will get proper care and upbringing,” Mrs. Elegbede said.

She advised women who are victims of domestic violence to always report to the secretariat when they were victimised by their spouses, adding that legal action will be taken against perpetrators without delay.
