The FCT Administration (FCTA) has taken delivery of four 50-seater hybrid buses, which are powered by Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and diesel fuel. 

The buses were donated by the Presidential CNG Initiative (PCNGI) to help boost public transportation in the nation’s capital.

The PCNGI is a flagship program of the Nigerian government, launched in 2023. Its goal is to promote the widespread adoption of CNG and electric vehicles, especially for mass transit, to achieve cost savings, create jobs, improve energy security, and establish an environmentally friendly transport system.

The donation is coming after Daily Trust had reported about the modern terminals built by the FCT Administration without buses.

Receiving the keys to the high-capacity buses, the Mandate Secretary for the FCT Transport Secretariat, Chinedu Elechi, called the donation a welcome development.

 He said the buses will complement the ongoing efforts to reposition the public transport system in the FCT.

Elechi, who accepted the donation on behalf of the FCT Minister, Mr. Nyesom Wike, noted that the buses will efficiently move over 200 people, improving the daily commute for residents across the territory.

According to him, the FCT Minister has always maintained that no modern city can survive without a robust public transportation system.

“Public transportation is meant to move people from one point to another, especially those who cannot afford private transport, or those who can afford it but choose to use the public system,” Elechi stated. 

Earlier, while making the donation, the Program Director/Chief Executive of the Presidential CNG Initiative, Mr. Michael Oluwagbemi, said the donation was part of the initiative’s effort to make CNG a reality for efficient public transportation.

He stated that the FCT, by demonstrating strong support for the program and showing innovation through its investment in roads and terminals, was a natural and deserving beneficiary of the initiative.

Oluwagbemi expressed his hope that the delivery of the buses would be a foundational asset for the new terminals and a robust transportation system in the FCT.
