The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory,Nyesom Wike, has ordered the sweeping of miscreants, beggars, illegal traders, scavengers, one-chance criminalsand other social vices in Abuja and its satellite towns.
Abuja Metro reports that the operation was code-named “Operation sweep Abuja.”
This was disclosed in an official statement released on Wednesday by the minister’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and social media, Lere Olayinka.
The enforcement, the statement saidwas in accordance with Abuja Environmental Protection Act and other relevant laws.
According to him, the operation is aimedat sanitising the city and remove individuals and activities deemed detrimental to public safety and urban aesthetics.
A Joint Task Force comprising various security agencies and relevant FCT departments has been mobilized to enforce the minister’s directive to apprehend individuals found begging, scavenging, loitering, or engaging in unlawful street trading and other disruptive acts.
Olayinka also noted that arrangements were in place to properly profile those apprehended and return them to their respective state governments for appropriate reintegration.
“Security is my job, your job, and our job,” the Minister declared, reinforcing the collective responsibility of safeguarding the city.
