The FCTA is set to implement Community Policing policy in the territory following the submission of its modalities to the FCT minister by the FCT Commissioner of Police (CP).

The FCT CP, Mr. Bala Ciroma, while briefing the FCT Security Council at a meeting which was chaired by the Minister of the FCT, Malam Muhammad Musa Bello, said the modalities, among other things, spelt out the roles of the community constabularies who would be engaged by communities.

In a statement, the FCT minister’s Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Anthony Ogunleye, said the main functions of the constabularies would be crime detection and prevention, settlement of low level civil disputes and petty crimes, criminal intelligence gathering and dissemination to the local police commanders; dealing with minor offences and social vices, assisting in traffic management and school safety duties, among others.

He added that the constabularies would also operate only within the communities in which they were recruited and were not permitted to operate outside of their localities, stressing that the police would train the volunteers and provide them with uniforms and means of identification.

While commending the CP and the Community Policing Advisory Committee of the FCT, the FCT minister called for a functional and equitable distribution of the volunteers across the FCT based on the needs of the communities.

He also called for the active involvement of the area council chairmen and traditional rulers in the recruitment and deployment processes.
