The Agriculture and Rural Development Secretariat of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has said it will hold the third edition of the FCT Fishing Festival in April, 2020, at Yaba in Abaji Area Council.
In a statement by the spokesman of the secretariat, Zakaria Aliyu, the Minister of State for the FCT, Dr. Ramatu Tijjani Aliyu, approved the festival with the aim of promoting tourism, attracting viable investment in the aquaculture industry and its value chain.
The acting Secretary of the secretariat, Mr. Ibe Prospect Chukwuemeka, said the FCT inter-departmental planning committee for the festival arrived at the decision after its meeting at the weekend.
Mr. Chukwuemeka said, “You are all aware that the last time the fishing festival took place was in 2012, and if you go round the FCT; from Abaji to Bwari, you will discover that the city is endowed with abundant rich water bodies that have not been effectively harnessed. We must, therefore, commend the minister for this bold decision of reviving the festival which undoubtedly will help in promoting our rich potential both in the tourism and aquaculture sectors.”
Mr. Ibe, therefore, charged members of the committee to put in their best in the discharge of its duty towards ensuring the success of the festival.
The Director of Fisheries of the FCTA, Mrs. Ifeoma Okeke, said the committee would embark on advocacy visits to relevant stakeholders to explore possible partnership with them, and that it would also embark on a sensitisation tour of all the area councils in order to mobilise their participation and support for the festival.
She said the fisheries department had conducted an assessment of the Yaba River which would experience high water level suitable for the fishing activities.
