The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has announced it will sanction Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs) under the FCT Health Insurance Scheme (FHIS) that fail to promptly remit payments to healthcare providers.

The FHIS is a social health insurance program designed to offer financial protection and access to quality, affordable, and equitable healthcare for all FCT residents. 

Enrolment is free for FCTA and area council staff, as well as vulnerable individuals, including pregnant women. Other members of the public can enrol by paying an annual premium of N22,500.

To enhance the quality of healthcare services for FHIS enrollees, FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, approved and oversaw the payment of approximately N4 billion between last year and this year. This amount covered outstanding and backlog payments for capitation and fee-for-service from 2022 to 2024.

According to a Tuesday statement from Lere Olayinka, the Senior Special Assistant to the FCT Minister on Public Communications and Social Media, the FHIS benefit package includes the Basic Minimum Package of Health Care Services (BMPHS), which encompasses promotive, preventive, curative, and some rehabilitative care services.
