The Committee of Chairmen of Boards of Federal Tertiary Health Institutions (FTHIs) have said that their hospitals across the country are positioned to respond adequately should Nigeria experience a second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Chairman of the committee, Dr. Sam Jaja, said this in Abuja while fielding questions from newsmen after the general annual meeting of the committee.

Dr. Jaja, who is also the chairman of the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, Gwagwalada, said the hospitals have been able to do this from lessons learnt from the pandemic as well as support the institutions got from the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 and the Federal Ministry of Health, among others.

He said that also accounted for the low number of cases and mortality recorded from COVID-19 in the country.

He called on the public to comply with instituted protocols against COVID-19 to prevent transmission.

Dr Jaja also called on Nigerians and stakeholders to assist indigent patients, saying that many tertiary hospitals were overwhelmed with patients who could not pay for treatment.

He also called on health workers to exercise caution in embarking on industrial actions, adding that many lives are lost when industrial actions occur.
