A Federal High Court in Benin City, Edo State, has sentenced a female drug trafficker, Owoeye Tobi, to ten years imprisonment with hard labour. However, she was given an option of a N25 million fine.

The convict, who hails from Osun State, was arraigned on a five-count charge of drug possession in February 2025 by the Edo State command of the NDLEA. She was found in unlawful possession of drugs weighing 168.1 grams.

The breakdown of the seized drugs includes 161 grams of cannabis sativa, 0.2 grams of heroin, 0.7 grams of cocaine, 2.4 grams of Tramadol capsules, and 3.8 grams of Methamphetamine.

In his ruling, Justice B. O. Quadiri sentenced the convict to two years each on the five-count charge in a correctional center with hard labour. The judge also gave her an option of a N5 million fine on each of the five count charges.

Reacting to the judgment, the Edo State commander of the NDLEA, Mitchell Ofoyeju, stated that such strict penalties are essential in deterring potential offenders and reinforcing ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking.

He emphasized that drug trafficking is a criminal offense that has caused untold havoc to mankind, affecting individuals, families, and society.
