The Fertiliser Producers and Suppliers Association of Nigeria (FEPSAN) has vowed to ban any fertilizer blending plant caught producing adulterated fertilisers in the country.

FEPSAN Executive Secretary Gideon Negedu, who disclosed this during a one-day stakeholders’ meeting for registered distributors held in Kaduna, said, “We are reading the riot act to any FEPSAN member that is caught involved in adulteration. If you adulterate fertilisers, you will not be spared no matter who you are because we must ensure that farmers get quality fertilisers.”

“Majority of these are people who don’t have the knowledge to test good fertilisers; they don’t have the capacity to know this is good fertiliser or bad fertiliser,” he stated.

Negedu said, “Some people make money out of them; they make money out of their ignorance. FEPSAN is making a strong position through its blenders, through its distributors that we will not tolerate adulteration. We stand for quality and will work to ensure that farmers get good quality fertilisers to increase their harvest.”

On his part, the Vice President of West African Fertiliser Association, Dr Innocent Okwokwu, said the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA) has introduced a device to track trucks carrying Urea fertilizer in any location across the country to ensure that only farmers get access to the vital farm input.

Okwokwu said the meeting was to educate people about new developments in the industry. “There were challenges in the past and I think part of tackling the challenges is to start with people not sufficiently informed about the regulations that guide what they are doing. That is why they run into hitches.”

“At this forum today, people are presented with how the NSA’s Office has got a system that tracks every truck carrying fertilizer, especially those carrying Urea from one place to another.”

In his remark, the Director Farm Input Support Services, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Ishaku Buba, said the meeting was to discuss fertiliser distribution in Nigeria, particularly that been handled by fertiliser producers and the suppliers association in the country.
