Festival of Ayakoroma’s plays to open in Abuja

The festival which will see the theatre outfit stage two of Dr. Barclays Ayakoroma’s plays, Castle in the Air and Beyond the Camp, while the theatre department of the Nassarawa State University would put up Dance on his Grave.

The outfit revealed that the festival, which will take place at the French Cultural Centre in Abuja, is expected to be chaired by Honourable Dr. Jerry Alagbaoso, a playwright and member of the Federal House of Representatives from Imo State; with Senator Suleiman Adokwe as Special Guest of Honour.

President of the Society of Nigerian Theatre Arts (SONTA) and Head of Department of Theatre Arts,Nassarawa State University, Prof. Emma Dandaura will deliver the keynote address: The Theatrics of Barclays Ayakoroma, taking a look at the societal value and relevance of Barlays Ayakoroma’s theatrical offerings.

Jerry Adesewo, speaking on the festival reveals that it is part of the group’s desire to contribute to the development of theatre in Nigeria, especially in the nation’s capital and to honour the contribution of Dr. Ayakoroma to the theatre industry in Nigeria.

“In 2013, Arojah Royal Theatre hopes to stage the first ever ABUJA INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL OF THEATRE (ABUFEST), so for us, this is more of an opportunity to test-run and see what it feels like. This is just one of such series of mini-theatre festival. Another will come up before the end of this year,” Jerry reveals, adding that Abuja residents should come out in their hundreds to support their effort to keep the theatre culture  alive in Abuja and Nigeria at large.
