Fewer babies born in Germany in 2017 than previous year

There were fewer babies born in Germany in 2017 than in 2016, according to statistics released on Friday by the Federal Statistics Office in Wiesbaden.

“There were some 792,000 live births in Germany in 2017, which was 7,000, or 0.9 per cent, fewer than in 2016.

“In contrast, the number of deaths in Germany rose by 2.4 per cent over the year to 933,000.

“Since 1972, more people have been dying in Germany than have been born, however, in 2017, the difference between births and deaths was 147,000, compared to 119,000 in 2016,’’ according to the statistics.

Meanwhile, 407,000 couples got married in 2017, or 3,000 fewer than in 2016.
