The Federal Government has approved a 50 percent reduction in train fares on all services operated by the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) as part of efforts to cushion transportation costs during the Eid-el-Kabir celebration.
The approval, conveyed through the Federal Ministry of Transportation (FMT), takes effect from Tuesday, May 26, 2026 and will run until Monday, June 1, 2026.
Under the arrangement, passengers travelling on all NRC passenger train services across the country will pay only half of the existing approved fares throughout the period.
The Ministry also announced that passengers who had earlier purchased tickets at the old rates before the commencement of the discount would receive a 50 percent rebate. The rebate, according to the Ministry, will be reusable for train rides on or before June 1, 2026.
The initiative is expected to provide relief to thousands of Nigerians travelling for the Sallah celebration, especially along major train corridors.
Despite the fare reduction, train schedules and timetables will remain as previously advertised by the Corporation.
The Federal Ministry of Transportation stated that the gesture forms part of the Federal Government’s commitment to improving affordable transportation and supporting Nigerians during festive periods.
The Ministry appreciated Nigerians for their continued support and wished the Muslim faithful and all train passengers a peaceful and joyous Eid-el-Kabir celebration.
The announcement was signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Transportation, Engr. Funsho Adebiyi.
