Kakwi, who disclosed this to newsmen in Jos, said farmers to benefit from the GES would be selected based on their particular value chain as contained in the farmers’ registration that ended two months ago.
He also said the wet season GES, which was purely crops, had ended but a special GES was being rolled out to take care of both crops and non-crops in dry season and off season periods.
“The crops programme cover dry season farming such as rice, potatoes, soya beans and cassava. In the non-crops we have the livestock, while in the off season we have the agro-forestry products like the oil palm,’’ he said.
According to the director, “1,400 farmers were identified for soya beans and are expected to pay 50 per cent of the cost of fertilizer while the other inputs would be given to them free. In the cassava programme, about 600 farmers are involved and like the soya beans, they are expected to pay 50 per cent of the fertilizer while they get other inputs free.”
“100 farmers are to benefit from poultry and each farmer is to get 100 birds, 10 bags of feeds and vaccination programme. They are expected to pay 50% of the package, which is about N15,000 while 840 farmers are to benefit in fishery and each will be given 500 fingerlings, five bags of feeds and water analysis equipment, and they are to pay 50% of the cost of the package,’’ Kakwi said.
