According to the details of the 2014 Appropriation Bill for the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development now before the National Assembly, government has also allocated hundreds of millions of naira for the provision of different types of vegetable seeds next year.
A cursory look at the budget bill indicates that the sum of N44 million is to be spent on provision of seeds for the production of Ugwu leaf in the 2014 farming season.
The N44 million is captured in the allocation of the main ministry. The ministry also plans to spend N40 million on onion seeds and another N52 million will be spent in the provision of tomatoe seeds while Okra seeds will gulp N50 million.
Nigeria may witness a boost in vegetable production as the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development plans to spend about N237 million on vegetable seeds during the next fiscal year. N51million will be used to provide citrus seedlings to farmers.
