FG cautions on cybersecurity as Nigeria marks awareness month

As Nigeria marks international cybersecurity awareness month, this October, the Nigeria Communication Satellite (NIGCOMSAT) Ltd, has called on internet users to be cautious of malicious and dangerous  sites and as well take precaution in the cyberspace.

The Managing Director Chief Executive Officer, NIGCOMSAT Ltd, Dr. Abimbola Alale gave the advice in Abuja on Monday on behalf of the Federal Government.

While reeling out some tips to guide internet users, Dr. Alale said that the cyberspace is filled with malicious codes, links, Trojans and viruses with millions of unsuspecting users becoming vulnerable to these threats more than ever before.

“As we embark on the Cybersecurity awareness month, we are bringing to your notice some tips that could keep you safe on the internet”, she said.

According to her, Internet users are advised to be in the habit of securing their devices by using strong passwords and biometric features if possible.

Again, the Managing Director emphasized that though using strong password is desirable, it is also important to use two or multi factor authentication system as it comprises of two or more layered protection.

She cautioned further that the public should desist from connecting into public network as much as they can.

“Therefore Internet users are counselled to connect to secured and trusted or private networks if possible especially when handling financial or any sensitive transactions.

“On data management, users are informed to back up their data periodically.  It is very crucial to back up your data, remember malicious threats and hackers do not always want to steal just your data, but sometimes the game plan is to encrypt or erase it to either cause you harm or can leads to ransom seeking”, she added.
